The System76 "Lemur" - a quick Review

My main laptop is a 15” 2015 Retina MBP/OSX, and I do most of my linux work via Vagrant and/or AWS.   The Lemur exists mainly for build/test work and making sure that "stuff" still works for our non-MBP developers

That said, in no particular order -

Ubuntu Just Works out of the box.  Which is, maybe, the single most important thing that I cared about.  No fiddling, no messing around.  Just worked.  Sooo, mission accomplished in that sense.

What the heck is going on with the weird battery bump?  it tilts the keyboard up just fine on a desk, but gets very weird if you're typing with the laptop on your legs.

The whole things feels sort of plasticky. Not in a *bad* way, but in the same way most android phone feels somewhat plasticky as compared to an iPhone
The keys also have a slightly plasticky feel.  Again, not in a bad way - they’re actually quite good.

Come to think of it, the "plastic-y" feel I'm referring to is more about the texture/tactile nature of the plastic, i.e., almost a soft feel to it, with a little texture.  It's not actually soft, or rough, or anything.  Just a feel.

The trackpad…bites.  In exactly the same way that *all* non MBP trackpads tend to bite.  Maybe more?  I don't really know, 'cos I haven't used non MBP laptops for years now, but surely the state of the art has improved a while back?

Wifi is..interesting? It lost it’s ability to see networks once, right at the beginning, but a reboot seems to have fixed it.  Completely, with no further issues.  Should I be worried now?

Ethernet Just Works. (out of the box)

It’s fast, really fast (as in, faster than my MBP, AFAICT.  Totally subjective at this point. we’re talking compiles and stuff)  Then again, it's 3.6GHz vs 2.7GHz

The Ubuntu GUI bites as much as it used to...

The 1080p screen is ok.  It’s not retina, but for what i need, it’s just fine.
