George Will goes Godwin

Image
Today's bit of idiocy by St. George takes the cake, what with it not just containing the usual bad logic, ridiculous statements and obtuse language, but going quasi-Godwin in the process . According to Saint George, The (evil?) Obama's drive to federalize voter registration is part of his master plan to make voting compulsory Holder's comment " We should rethink this whole notion that voting only occurs on Tuesday " is " loopy " because, wait for it, in most states people vote before Tuesday. (Yeah. I don't get it either. But it makes sense to St. George) Takes a statement from the Heritage foundation (Fair! Balanced!) that voter registration rolls are in poor shape with more registered voters than actual people as gospel, and proceeds to use it as evidence that justifies the long waits in line to vote (strangely, only in tossup states. Hmmmmm), while blaming it on the Federal Govt. (I wonder if St. George has ever been to a - state run - D...

Argh! Stop with the "Church" thing already!

Image
Ross Douthat seems to have thrown his hat into the ring for the " Clueless Asshat of the Year " award with his latest troll entitled " The Liberal Gloat ".  To quote The liberal image of a non-churchgoing American is probably the “spiritual but not religious” seeker, or the bright young atheist reading Richard Dawkins. But the typical unchurched American is just as often an underemployed working-class man, whose secularism is less an intellectual choice than a symptom of his disconnection from community in general. Which of course brings to mind those other "unchurched" Americans - you know, the Hindus, Sikhs, Moslems, Buddhists, Jews, etc. who - collectively - happen to, really, not be " underemployed working-class...(with a)... disconnection from community in general ". On the contrary, Hindus and Jews are (by far!) some of the wealthiest religious groups in the US (chart at the bottom), and Buddhists beat out Christians (not by much, but ...

Does David Brooks know *anything* about Europe?

Image
Another day, another display of epic cluelessness by the Serious Mr. David Brooks - this time when he takes on the American welfare system.  His latest article in the NY Times contains some classic Serious-isms.  Take this bon-mot for instance But many Republicans have now come to the conclusion that the welfare-state model is in its death throes ... the first phase of that collapse [of the welfare state] is playing out right now in Greece, Spain and Italy. Really dude?  Really ? Does he actually know anything about Europe, other than a reflexive " Europe sucks! U.S.A! U.S.A! " response?  If he'd bothered to use The Googles, he'd find that in Europe, countries spending more on welfare than Greece, Spain and Italy include (get this!) Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands !  In fact, Spain is actually waaaaay down on the list, with basically most of the rest of the European countries ahead of it!  I mean, Germany! Switzzerland!...

Does David Brooks know *anything* about Economics? (hint: "No")

Image
Mr. Serious David Brooks has a doozy of an article up in the NY Times , which he starts off in thrilling fashion with Every generation has an incentive to borrow money from the future to spend on itself. But, until ours, no generation of Americans has done it to the same extent. Say what? WTF is "borrowing from the future "?  Seriously, WTF?  Is there a special bank somewhere where you get to go and ask your (unborn) great-grandkids for a loan?  Where time-traveling repo-men come by and take your car Back To The Future in case you stop paying? For the last time (ok, probably not the last time, but I can hope),   Borrowing Happens NOW! When you borrow money, you get it from someone else, right now . The big-honking deficit?  Thats money you - and I, and everyone else - are borrowing from China and Norway and a bunch-a other countries.  They are lending us the money, right now , (at crazy cheap rates I might add). What? You are troubled by al...

Somebody please tell David Brooks to STFU

Especially when he doesn't know the first that about what he is talking about. Seriously. The Serious Mister Brooks has an article up at NY Times where he is ostensibly discussing Cyclical vs Structural issues in he current downturn.  Sure. Fine. Whatever.  He wants to be an armchair economist, then he can absolutely go knock himself out - heck, I'm one too. But then comes the zinger Unlike the cyclicalists, we structuralists do not believe that the level of government spending is the main factor in determining how fast an economy grows. If that were true, then Greece, Britain and France would have the best economies on earth. (The so-called European austerity is partly mythical.) We believe that the creativity, skill and productivity of the work force matter most, and the openness of the system they inhabit. Say what?  Huh?  " Unlike the cyclicalists, we structuralists do not believe that the level of government spending is the main factor in determin...
