Hoisted from the transcript of  Salazar v. Buono JUSTICE SCALIA : The cross doesn't honor non-Christians who fought in the war? Is that -- is that -- MR. ELIASBERG : I believe that's actually correct. JUSTICE SCALIA : Where does it say that? MR. ELIASBERG : It doesn't say that, but a cross is the predominant symbol of Christianity and it signifies that Jesus is the son of God and died to redeem mankind for our sins, and I believe that's why the Jewish war veterans -- JUSTICE SCALIA : It's erected as a war memorial. It's the -- the cross is the -- is the most common symbol of -- of -- of the resting place of the dead, and it doesn't seem to me -- what would you have them erect? A cross -- some conglomerate of a cross, a Star of David, and you know, a Moslem half moon and star? MR. ELIASBERG : Well, Justice Scalia, if I may go to your first point. The cross is the most common symbol of the resti...

The American Family Association (of which the less said the better) has a new email out titled "What will religion look like in 2060 ". ThinkProgress has the details - go there and take a look at the original . The email deserves a thorough fisking, and thankfully Hunter is up to the task ( reproduced from the original below ) What will religion look like in the year 2060? Laser shows. Lots and lots of laser shows. Conservative Christians will be treated as second class citizens, much like African Americans were prior to civil rights legislation in the 1960s. There will be "conservative Christian" drinking fountains, and special "conservative Christians" entrances to buildings, and conservative Christians will be … oh, let's just move on. Family as we know it will be drastically changed with the state taking charge of the children beginning at birth. And doing what with them? Wildmon doesn't say, presumably because we would all find i...

Argh! Stop with the "Church" thing already!

Ross Douthat seems to have thrown his hat into the ring for the " Clueless Asshat of the Year " award with his latest troll entitled " The Liberal Gloat ".  To quote The liberal image of a non-churchgoing American is probably the “spiritual but not religious” seeker, or the bright young atheist reading Richard Dawkins. But the typical unchurched American is just as often an underemployed working-class man, whose secularism is less an intellectual choice than a symptom of his disconnection from community in general. Which of course brings to mind those other "unchurched" Americans - you know, the Hindus, Sikhs, Moslems, Buddhists, Jews, etc. who - collectively - happen to, really, not be " underemployed working-class...(with a)... disconnection from community in general ". On the contrary, Hindus and Jews are (by far!) some of the wealthiest religious groups in the US (chart at the bottom), and Buddhists beat out Christians (not by much, but ...

"Freedom of Religion" --> Do 'other' religions count?

From the great state of Louisiana, we have a heart-warming story of religious tolerance.  For those of you who don't know, Governor Bobby Jindal (who probably has the world record for the shortest time in the Presidential Candidate limelight after his EPIC FIAL of a State of the Union response in 2009 ) signed a school voucher bill allowing parents to send kids to private schools at public expense , regardless of the type of school, i.e., religious, etc. Sounds great right? Especially the bit about public money paying for sending kids to religious schools? (work w/ me here). Well, turns out that Rep. Valarie Hodges (R-Watson) is having second thoughts . Turned out that when she voted for the bill, she had mistakenly assumed that religious meant Christian :-( According to her 'I liked the idea of giving parents the option of sending their children to a public school or a Christian school,'  'Unfortunately it will not be limited to the Founders’ religion.  ...
