The Geography of (Cheap) Beer - Twitter style

Image
via Floating Sheep ...a new publication by members of the Floatingsheep team. Just released is "Offline Brews and Online Views: Exploring the Geography of Beer on Twitter",  a new book chapter written by Matt and Ate that analyzes the geographies of beer-related tweeting activity  [and]  shows that geotagged tweets about beer, and other alcoholic beverages for that matter, are reflective of people's offline consumption preferences. Using a database of one million geotagged tweets from June 2012 to May 2013 containing the keywords "wine", "beer" or the names of a range of light or cheaper beers within the continental US, some clear regional variations in alcoholic beverage preference are detected. [...] While Bud Light is more popular in the eastern and southeastern US, Coors Light tends to dominate the west coast, with Miller Lite and Busch Light being preferred in the midwest and Great Plains. The dominance of these brands in virtual space is no...

From Pop Chart Labs  we have this monster 60"x40" chart which, apparently is the most complete charting of beer ever, breaking down ales and lagers into over 100 delicious styles from hoppy IPAs to fruity lambics, and including over 500 individual beers as notable examples of each style as well as glassware recommendations. Its $90 - if you have a 'man cave', you probably need one of these :-)

The Rise of Craft Beer - Visualized

Image
The New Yorker does yeoman's work in this exceedingly straightforward yet highly informative interactive visualization. Mind you, per The Daily Meal's   (exceedingly unscientific?) poll of their readers, the Best Craft Beer In America  is   Dogfish Head from Delaware. Mind you, its not that Dogfish Head is bad, but I suspect there are any number of others that may be as good, or better ( Ommegang anyone?) (The below are screen grabs - go to the original for the interactive version ) Breweries per 50,000 people (Montana rivals Oregon? wtf?) Fastest growing breweries (Kentucky? Really?) Total Breweries (Mississippi, Alabama, and the Dakotas are waaaay behind)

Beer Bikes Banned? Oh Noes!

Image
I bring you the following from the Christian Science Monitor Classified as bicycles, they can ride on the streets and park wherever, and they don’t pollute. But on the street, they look like a restaurant on wheels: wide, pedal-powered, multiseat conference bikes taking between 10 and 20 party-goers zigzagging through the most crowded shopping or tourist areas ... Now the “beer bikes,” born in neighboring   Holland , are under scrutiny. Last month, a court in the western city of   Düsseldorf formally banned them, saying that the beer bikes are a traffic nuisance. The court case could bolster efforts under way in German cities from   Berlin   to   Münster   to ban the contraptions. I weep for our future...

Mahesh's Second Law - Beer

You can always get a Good Beer. Really. There is probably some form of historical context associated with this, probably referring to Mankind's Transformation From Hunter-Gatherer To Agrarian , or some other equally relevant, esoteric, and verbose take on Society. There might even be a reference to the domestication of Wild Hops as a metaphor for Mans Quest For The Transcendent , or something equally ludicrous. The bottom line is, it doesn't matter where you are in the world, if you need a beer, you can get one. And, it will be Good.
