NY Eats - Barbone
Barbone (186 Avenue B New York, NY), a small Italian joint on the lower east side.
Dinner with The Nicole last night, and much fun was had by all (she had on her glitter shoes, and they really, really add to the ambience!).
Appetizers are passable. Ok, more than passable, Good. That said, you can get Good appetizers pretty much anywhere, so yeah, this wouldnt really be a Destination spot for the Appetizers.
The Pasta, however, is most definitely destination food! Brilliantly executed, with a decent number of them made on the premises, you really, really can't go wrong there. We had a Chestnut Agnolotti, Linguini con Vongole, and a Black Pepper Pappardelle (w/ some Beef ragu. Brilliant!). It was all seriously, spectacularly, frighteningly good.
They have a 5-course Pasta tasting menu for $35 or so, but don't go there. Frankly, if you're normal, an app and a small plate of the pasta (they come in small and large sizes - usually $11 and $18) should be more than sufficient. If there are two of you, 2 apps and 3 small plates takes you straight to the "whoa! I ate too much!* stage. Mind you, well worth doing....
On a side note, they have a neat wine list. The best part is, they have Quartinos (250ml). Get one per head if you're not a lush, and you'll have plenty for the table (The Nicole and I prefer half bottles 'tween the two of us, and in that sense, 500 ml takes us to a fairly happy place :-) )
Run, don't walk, there....
